Gladys Adisa Erude was born in Tigoi, a small village in Western Kenya. She completed her formative years in education, which included Lugulu girls High School, before ending up at the Kenya Institute of Mass Communications in Nairobi. She worked at the Voice of Kenya for almost three decades before retiring. Over the course of her career, she traveled the world, including stays in the Netherlands, Germany, China, Mauritius, and several other countries.

Throughout her life and the other characters, she is forced to deal with forced marriage, wife inheritance, gender norms, and the ubiquitous cultural clash between traditional ways of life and modern morays.
